Video: Stricken helicopter plunges into London rush-hour, killing two

A PILOT who died after his helicopter collided with a crane in low cloud yesterday and plummeted more than 700ft to the street below was described as ?one of the best? by former colleagues.

Pete Barnes, who has piloted helicopters for a number of Hollywood films, was alone in the aircraft amid thick, low cloud when it clipped the crane near the top of one of Europe?s largest skyscrapers.

Mr Barnes died, along with a second, unidentified person on the street, when the helicopter crashed and exploded in a ball of flames in the middle of London?s rush hour. At least 12 other people were injured. An investigation into the crash is under way.

Kevin Hodgson, who worked alongside Mr Barnes on life-saving missions with the Great North Air Ambulance, said: ?Pete was as good a guy as you can imagine, and one of the best pilots I?ve ever had the pleasure of flying with.?

In the aftermath of the crash, questions were raised over the safety of aircraft flying over London, especially as the number of high-rise blocks being built increases.

Commander Neil Basu, of the Metropolitan Police, said: ?It was something of a miracle that this was not many, many times worse.?

In one case of good fortune, it was reported that the crane driver avoided near-certain death because he was late for his shift and had not reached his cabin by the time of the incident.

Mr Barnes, 50, had been flying from Redhill in Surrey to Elstree in Hertfordshire, but had asked to be diverted to the London helipad in Battersea because of bad weather.

Aldersgate Investments, which owns the heliport, said he never made contact.

At about 8am yesterday, his Agusta Westland 109 Power ? a lightweight, twin-engine helicopter ? collided with the crane on top of The Tower skyscraper in Vauxhall, near the Thames.

Witnesses said the collision sounded like a bomb going off.

Mark Sidney, who was heading for Vauxhall Tube station, said: ?I heard a loud bang, I looked up and saw bits of propeller and parts of the aircraft falling off it and then plummeting down. Then a plume of smoke went up.

?I called the emergency services. It happened in a matter of a seconds before it was on the ground. I could see the top of the crane was shaking on the top of the building. It was very foggy so the helicopter probably couldn?t see it.? Steve Carslake, who got out of a van in Mill Street to see the crash, said: ?We heard a mighty bang, looked up and saw the helicopter just catch the edge of the crane.

?It didn?t hit the tower block itself, it hit the crane and then just came down in a fireball.?

Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene, where one man had to be rescued from a burning car.

Several people were injured after being hit by falling debris, and two buildings caught fire. Six engines, 88 firefighters, four rescue units and other specialist vehicles were dispatched to the scene by the London Fire Brigade.

The accident was close to the headquarters of MI6. Conservative MP Nicky Morgan, who was walking close by at the time, said: ?Within a minute there were sirens, so you felt that the emergency services were immediately reacting, which was comforting. It is a terrible, unexpected tragedy. I wondered if it was a bomb explosion.?

Julian Firth, of the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, said the wreckage would be taken to its site at Farnborough in Hampshire, but added that it would be ?several months? before a full report was produced.

Investigations are also likely to focus on whether there were adequate warning lights on the crane.

A spokeswoman for Berkeley Group, which owns St George, the development company for the building, said the crane had two lights, which were checked daily and were working on Tuesday when last inspected.

The Civil Aviation Authority said helicopter regulations for flying over London included ?requirements for lighting on tall structures?.

It added: ?In addition, where appropriate, very tall structures are also notified to pilots for flight planning purposes, as was the case with the crane that was involved in this morning?s accident.?

The eight-seater aircraft is owned by Cornwall-based Castle Air but was leased to another company, Rotor-Motion, which is based at Red-hill Aerodrome.

Captain Philip Amadeus, managing director of Rotor-Motion, an executive helicopter charter business, confirmed the aircraft was on a commercial flight to Elstree.

He said: ?Our main priority now is for the family of the pilot and we extend our greatest sympathy to the friends and relatives of those who have died and been injured.?

Mr Barnes had around 9,000 hours of flying time, including 3,500 hours on the type of aircraft involved in the incident.

The Labour MP for Vauxhall, Kate Hoey, said questions must be asked about whether helicopters should continue to

be allowed to fly over central London.

?We will need a real inquiry into increasing numbers of helicopters flying around London, coupled with the fact there are so many new tall buildings,? she said.

Speaking during Prime Ministers Questions yesterday, David Cameron agreed.

?I think the point she [Ms Hoey] makes about the rules for helicopter flights and indeed other flights over our capital city,? he said.

?I?m sure they will be looked at as part of the investigations that will take place.?

S Africa ? Unions and DA appeal for action as W Cape farm protests escalate

?Cosatu is calling on the government to get more directly involved in the strike as a matter of urgency,? the Congress of South African Trade Unions?s Western Cape secretary Tony Ehrenreich said in a statement on Sunday.

Talks to end the violent wage dispute were at a standstill after parties failed to agree on who should mediate the negotiations after three days of intense unrest last week, which saw a total of 125 protestors being arrested on charges of public violence.

?We are ready and willing to negotiate but it would seem the majority of farmers are not interested ? so national government must now become involved,? Ehrenreich told the Mail & Guardian.

The labour department has tasked the Council Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to facilitate talks between agricultural trade associations and sectorial unions ? a move rejected by farm owners.

?The CCMA does not have the mandate to draw a conclusion to the matter. It would seem the buck has simply been passed from one authority to the next,? Theo de Jager, deputy president of Agri SA ? one of the largest agricultural trade associations in South Africa ? told the M&G.

Labour department declined calls ?The labour minister is the one who should be out here managing the process, as her department is responsible for the sectorial determination of wages and working conditions,? De Jager added.

But the labour department declined calls so far to become directly involved in the matter.

?The department has stressed the CCMA should mediate between farmer organisations and all unions involved in the matter to find an equitable solution,? Mokgadi Pela, acting spokesperson for the department, said.

?As a department we urge all parties to come to the negotiation table as soon as possible to end this untenable situation.?

Riot police kept watch amid tensions in the region over the weekend after last week?s demonstrations resulted in police unloading a barrage of rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas at hundreds of aggressive protesters.

Political conspiracies Last year around 8?000 protesters demonstrated in November 2012 over the same issues.

These events have led to allegations of a political conspiracy as cause for the unrest.

At the time the ANC claimed to be suspicious of ?the clear collusion? between the Democratic Alliance-run provincial government and organised agriculture in the province.

The DA?s Western Cape agriculture minister Gerrit van Rensburg countered the protests were politically-motivated and not a ?labour unrest?.

The current disquiet has also been accompanied by taunts from the ANC towards the DA.

?Cry baby? Zille South African Communist Party secretary general and ruling party national executive council member Blade Nzimande on Saturday said Western Cape Premier Helen Zille should not act like a ?cry baby? about the strike.

?I have a message for Helen Zille. Do not be like a cry baby asking national government to intervene,? he said in an address to ANC members in Durban for the ruling party?s 101st anniversary celebrations.

?Go and tell the bosses to negotiate with farmworkers and give them decent wages.?

In response, director of communications for the Western Cape government Nick Clelland complained of a ?deafening silence? from the ANC-led government on the matter.

?There is a lot of noise being made by the ANC and its alliance partners but very little offerings of a solution,? he told the M&G.

?Where is the labour minister?? ?Where is [Labour] Minister [Mildred] Oliphant or any minister calling for calm in what has become a close to hysterical situation where property is being destroyed and people?s livelihoods are being ruined??

Clelland said there needed to be visible leadership from national government, and Cabinet in particular.

?This is a situation where desperate people need to change their situation ? it?s not a time for cheap politicking or other games ??The provincial government has been there from the start and continues to be there. It is a problem that is national; it affects all of South Africa and is only going to be solved through a collaborative effort by all spheres of government.?

But Ehrenreich scoffed at suggestions of political interference and of the provincial government making any attempt to resolve the conflict.

?There is no wonder this protests have turned out the way they have, as people are tired of waiting,? he said.

?If you want to see this come to an end, a decent wage needs to be paid; it?s as simple as that.?

Wage increase Workers demanded the sector?s minimum wage be set at R150 ? more than double the current minimum R69 many labourers earn for a day?s work, as well as an improvement in living standards.

But many farmers claimed this was unaffordable.

?You can?t simply see the farmers as being these guys that are greedy,? De Jager said.

?There is only so much workers can be paid from an affordability perspective. Profit margins are low and the more pressure the industry experiences in the manner, the less chance it will succeed.?

De Jager added that the future of South African agriculture sector depended on the ability to deal with matters timeously.

?We are bound to lose labour intensified industries if this carries on,? he said.

?We?ve lost the coffee and tea industry already to places like Malawi and Rwanda, and the vegetables and timber sectors are next under threat.?? M&G

When Are 2012 Taxes Due? Tax Deadline in 2013 - Faith and Finance

tax deadline 2013

by Tim on January 14, 2013

Normally taxes are due on April 15 each year, but sometimes that date falls on a weekend or a holiday (which happened in 2012).? This year, however, taxes are due on April 15, 2013, which falls on a Monday.

April 15, 2013 is also the deadline for making a tax extension, so if you need more time to complete your taxes this year, be sure to file an extension.?? This year, the extension will allow you to wail until October 15, 2013 to file your taxes ? but only if you file the extension form!

When Can I File My Taxes in 2013?

If you?re eager to get a tax return, you can file right away, but the IRS won?t accept a tax return until January 30th.? You can still start the process in Turbo Tax, but don?t expect the IRS to get your refund done in January!

If you?ve used Turbo Tax in the past, all of your information is saved in your profile, which will make the filing process much easier for you this year.

When Will My Tax Refund Come?

The IRS isn?t the fastest organization in the world?but luckily the e-file service speeds up the process significantly.? Some tax filers can even see a tax refund in as little as 8-14 days.? But don?t expect a speedy return, especially if you plan on sending in your tax forms via snail mail.

Why I Use Turbo Tax to File

I?ve been using Turbo Tax for over 5 years now and I absolutely love it.? Even when our tax situation changed with additional business income, Turbo Tax made it extremely easy to file my taxes on time and correctly.? I think of it as ?GPS? for taxes.? It?s definitely worth spending a little bit of money if you don?t qualify for the free version of Turbo Tax.? Good luck filing!

When do you expect to file your taxes this year?

Waltz wins supporting-actor Globe for 'Django'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Christoph Waltz has won the supporting-actor Golden Globe for his role as a genteel bounty hunter who takes on an ex-slave as apprentice in "Django Unchained."

Sunday's win was Waltz's second supporting-actor prize at the Globes, both of them coming in Quentin Tarantino films. Waltz's violent but paternal and polite "Django" character is a sharp contrast to the wickedly bloodthirsty Nazi he played in his Globe and Oscar-winning role in Tarantino's 2009 tale "Inglourious Basterds."

"Let me gasp," said Waltz, whose competition included "Django" co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. "Quentin, you know that my indebtedness to you and my gratitude knows no words."

Pop star Adele and co-writer Paul Epworth won for best song for their theme tune to the James Bond adventure "Skyfall."

"Oh, my God!" Adele gushed repeatedly, before offering gratitude to the group that presents the Globes. "I'd like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press. I never thought I'd say that."

The prize for musical score went to Mychael Danna for the lost-at-sea tale "Life of Pi," who said he wanted to share the award with the film's director, Ang Lee.

"Ang, I will always treasure this voyage we made together," Danna said. "Thank for guiding us all to shore safely."

Show hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who co-starred in the 2008 big-screen comedy "Baby Mama," had a friendly rivalry at the Globes. Both were nominated for best actress in a TV comedy series, Fey for "30 Rock" and Poehler for "Parks and Recreation."

"Tina, I just want to say that I very much hope that I win," Poehler told Fey at the start of the show.

"Thank you. You're my nemesis. Thank you," Fey replied.

Poehler also had a quip about television vs. film at the Globes, where the small-screen category typically takes a backseat to the big-screen nominees.

"Only at the Golden Globes do the beautiful people of film rub shoulders with the rat-faced people of television," Poehler said.

Among TV recipients were Julianne Moore won a best-actress Globe for her role as Sarah Palin in "Game Change," which also was picked as best TV miniseries or movie. "Homeland" was named best TV drama series, and its star Damian Lewis received the TV drama actor Globe. Maggie Smith as supporting actress for "Downton Abbey."

"I'd like to dedicate this to my mum, looking down on me bursting with pride telling everyone around her how well her son is doing in acting," Lewis said.

An unusually chilly day in southern California left Globe guests looking glamorous but feeling frigid.

Claire Danes of "Homeland" in Versace and Zooey Deschanel of "New Girl" in a strapless Oscar de la Renta gown walked near heat lamps as the temperature stayed in the high 50s. "I'm so cold. My legs aren't cold but my arms are," Deschanel said.

The Globes are in a rare place this season, coming after the Academy Award nominations, which were announced earlier than usual and threw out some shockers that have left the Globes show a little less relevant.

Key Globe contenders lined up largely as expected, with Steven Spielberg's Civil War saga "Lincoln" leading with seven nominations and two CIA thrillers ? Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" and Ben Affleck's "Argo" ? also doing well.

All three films earned Globe nominations for best drama and director. Yet while "Lincoln," ''Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty" grabbed best-picture slots at Thursday's Oscar nominations, Bigelow and Affleck were snubbed for directing honors after a season that had seen them in the running for almost every other major award.

The Globe and Oscar directing fields typically match up closely. This time, though, only Spielberg and "Life of Pi" director Lee have nominations for both. Along with Spielberg, Lee, Bigelow and Affleck, Quentin Tarantino is nominated for directing at the Globes. At the Oscars, it's Spielberg, Lee, "Silver Linings Playbook" director David O. Russell and two surprise picks: veteran Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke for "Amour" and first-time director Benh Zeitlin for "Beasts of the Southern Wild."

That forces some top-name filmmakers to put on brave faces for the Globes. And while a Globe might be a nice consolation prize, it could be a little awkward if Affleck, Bigelow or Tarantino won Sunday and had to make a cheery acceptance speech knowing they don't have seats at the grown-ups table for the Feb. 24 Oscars.

That could happen. While "Lincoln" has the most nominations, it's a purely American story that may not have as much appeal to Globe voters ? about 90 reporters belonging to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who cover entertainment for overseas outlets.

The Bigelow and Affleck films center on Americans, too, but they are international tales ? "Zero Dark Thirty" chronicling the manhunt for Osama bin Laden and "Argo" recounting the rescue of six U.S. embassy workers trapped in Iran amid the 1979 hostage crisis.

Globe voters might want to make right on a snub to Bigelow three years ago, when they gave their best-drama and directing prize to ex-husband James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster "Avatar" over her Iraq war tale "The Hurt Locker."

Bigelow made history a month later, becoming the first woman to win the directing Oscar for "The Hurt Locker," which also won best picture.

Globe voters like to be trend-setters, but they missed the boat on that one. Might they feel enough chagrin to hand Bigelow the directing trophy this time?

Spielberg already has won two best-director Globes, so that might be a further inducement for the foreign-press members to favor someone else this time.

Their votes were locked in before the Oscar nominations came out. Globe balloting closed Wednesday, the day before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its awards lineup.

The Globe hosts had a wisecrack at Cameron's expense. Poehler noted that she had not been following the controversy over "Zero Dark Thirty," which has drawn criticism for indicating torture was pivotal in producing the tip that led to bin Laden.

But "when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who was married for three years to James Cameron," Poehler said.

The Globes feature two best-picture categories ? one for drama and one for musical or comedy. Most of the Globe contenders also earned Oscar best-picture nominations, including all of the drama picks: "Argo," ''Lincoln," ''Life of Pi," ''Django Unchained" and "Zero Dark Thirty."

Yet only two of the Globe musical or comedy nominees ? "Les Miserables" and "Silver Linings Playbook" ? are in the running at the Oscars. That's not unusual, though, since Oscar voters tend to overlook comedy. The other Globe nominees for musical or comedy are "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," ''Moonrise Kingdom" and "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen."

Globe acting recipients usually are a good sneak peek for who will win at the Oscars. All four of last season's Oscar winners ? Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady," Jean Dujardin for "The Artist," Octavia Spencer for "The Help" and Christopher Plummer for "Beginners" ? took home a Globe first.

Jodie Foster will receive the Globes' Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the 70th Globes ceremony.

The Communist Party is essentially an evil cult that harms mankind. Although the Communist Party has never called itself a religion, it matches every single trait of a religion. At the beginning of its establishment, it regarded Marxism as the absolute truth in the world. It exhorted people to engage in a life-long struggle for the goal of building a "communist heaven on earth."

Reid denies involvement in Utah businessman scheme

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office says the senator was never involved in a deal to have a Utah businessman pay Reid to make a federal investigation disappear.

St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson says a top official in the Utah attorney general's office orchestrated an agreement in 2010 to pay $600,000 to someone connected to Reid.

Johnson told The Salt Lake Tribune over the weekend that he believed Reid would intervene in the Federal Trade Commission's investigation into his business. Johnson is accused of running a fraudulent $350 million software scheme.

A spokeswoman for Reid's office, Kristen Orthman, says the Nevada Democrat "had no knowledge or involvement" in Johnson's case and said the allegations "are nothing more than innuendo and simply not true."

The top official who allegedly arranged the deal three years ago ? John Swallow ? also denies the accusation.

Swallow has since been elected the state's attorney general. He was sworn in earlier this month.
