Modesto?s 2012 Coffee Guide

by Ruben Porras

Winter is here and the time is now for The View Crew to help you decide where to go for tasty drinks that will keep the blood in your veins running warm. Modesto has a number of those Seattle-based green and white coffee shops but the true taste and spirt of Modesto is born in locally-owned shops that create more than coffee-laced beverages. These shops also create and foster community spirit by allowing performances and presentations by local artists and musical acts.

Mocha Magic ? 920 16th St (Next to Bank of America)

Mocha Magic is known for in-your-face coffee drinks that are designed to kickstart the bankers in the Bank of America building next door and anyone else looking for a tasty way to fuel a long day.

For a fun boost, try The Jumping Monkey which is premium roasted coffee flavored with banana, coconut and chocolate. If you think you can handle it, try The Cowboy which is an extremely dark roast coffee that infuses five different types of coffee beans. Mocha Magic uses only locally roasted beans from Milone Coffee of Modesto and they also have a full lunch menu.

Bottom?s Up ? Yosemite Blvd and Prescott Rd

A call to Bottom?s Up resulted in a conversation with an employee that is apparently trying to be named ?Perkiest Girl in the World.? She explained to us that the most popular drink on the Bottom?s Up menu is not actually a coffee-based drink.

Ask for (if you can get yourself to speak the words in public) The Sex In Your Mouth Twisted Redbull. The drink is a mind-quaking mix of Redbull, guava, passion fruit, and peach with a splash of orange juice added because you need your daily dose of vitamin C. By the way ? The girl handling your sexy drink will likely be wearing panties or a bikini and not much else. Bottoms up also serves tasty hot lattes and mochas with innuendo-laced names.

Bagels n? More ? 1532 Lakewood Ave, Suite 5

Bagels n? More keeps it simple yet spicy during the holidays. Drop by for a pumpkin spice latte or a pumpkin pie shake and stick around to try a breakfast bagel sandwich. The staffer that we spoke to was excited to talk about the store?s jalape?o cheese bagel. Sounds like a solid way to start a day.

Cafe Deva ? 1202 J St

Cafe Deva is known for being one of Modesto?s most popular music venues and for having a long list of food and drink offerings. Try the Caribe which adds steamed milk, white chocolate and coconut to a base of rich espresso. The drink is topped with whipped cream and coconut shavings. For a bite of citrus, try the Borge which tastes like a Terry?s chocolate orange. The Borge is made up of Mexican chocolate, orange, steamed milk, and whip cream and topped with orange zest for a lively spark of flavor.

Queen Bean ? 1126 14th St

Queen Bean is also a popular music venue and one of the most comfortable places in town to sit and relax for a while. Enjoy your drink or lunch inside a renovated Victorian home or outside on a vast patio. Try the Azteca mocha which combines high-impact espresso, steamed milk and Ibarra Mexican chocolate to create a unique favor experience that you will likely crave often.

Serrano Social Club ? 1030 J St

Serrano Social Club is not your average coffee shop. Tony and his crew have had their work featured in magazines all over the world and they are proud to have received hundreds of positive online reviews from their customers. Every drink that is made by the crew is a work of art. Try the Serrano Mocha ? The drink that serves as the foundation of the business. It is made up of organic whole milk, cocoa powder, honey, chili powder and the finest espresso available. Local organic ingredients are used.

Old Plantation Coffee and Cafe ? 3020 Floyd Ave

Old Plantation has been a popular stop in Modesto for years and is known for their gourmet eats as well as their gourmet drinks. Try their takes on classics such as the white mocha or the caramel macchiato or opt for their signature Giraffe which combines caramel and white chocolate. Sip while eating a chicken pesto panini or a salad that features toppings such as cranberries, fresh feta cheese and homemade Balsamic vinaigrette.

Davio?s Northern Italian Steakhouse in the Back Bay serves up a gluten-free pumpkin gnocchi this season. Available for lunch or dinner, the signature, seasonal dish features handmade gnocchi potato dumplings paired with spicy pumpkin puree in a gluten free dish. Chef Rodney Murillo shared the recipe.

Ingredients: 2 pounds Idaho potatoes, about 3 large, scrubbed and boiled in skins until tender, 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, 1/2 cup finely grated parmesan cheese, 1 egg, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon salt, freshly ground black pepper to taste, 2 to 3 cups of rice flour, and salted water, for cooking gnocchi. Directions: Allow the cooked potatoes to cool slightly, carefully peel while holding potato with a kitchen mitt. While still hot, puree potatoes through a ricer or food mill into a large mixing bowl and allow to cool completely before proceeding. Add the pumpkin puree, cheese, egg, cinnamon, allspice, salt and pepper, and mix well. Gradually add in enough rice flour to form smooth, slightly sticky dough. Briefly knead the dough to incorporate the flour, being careful not to overwork. Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Cut the dough into 10 equal pieces and place one piece on a lightly floured work surface. Roll piece into a long rope, about 1/2-inch in diameter, flouring lightly if needed. Slice the rope into pieces 1/2-inch wide. Holding one piece at a time, cut the small 1/2 inch cubes. Repeat with each piece of dough, setting formed gnocchi on a floured baking sheet. Immediately add the gnocchi to the boiling water and continue cooking for two to three minutes once they have risen to the top. Remove the cooked gnocchi with a slotted spoon or skimmer, and set aside briefly while making your favorite sauce.

Poll: Telemedicine Is Popular in Britain | HealthWorks Collective

A group of young bloggers conducted a poll on live, real-time telemedicine visits in the U.K.? They found that more than half of those surveyed liked the idea, but there was a sizeable number of skeptics.

Sebastian Lahtinen, Andrew Ferguson and John Hunt are the team behind the Broadband Blog, and they decided to conduct a poll to see?how their fellow countrymen feel about a proposed ?telehealth initiative that aims to get 100,000 of us in UK talking to our doctor over broadband by 2013.?

They asked: Do you think the idea of video conferencing with a health professional is a good idea?? Of those responding, 56%?said yes.??Three of ten people said no with 12% not knowing.? Two percent checked ?none of the above.?? The blogging team says the high number of those who said no indicates that many Britons are wary.? They suggest that it would be good to know whether video conference consultations work better if the patient has previously met the person at the far end.

Have you ever contacted your GP (primary care provider) or other health professional using your Internet connection?? Only 16% had done so at least once, while 82% had not.? Even for routine things like making an appointment, the Brits still use the telephone rather than an online system.

If telemedicine leads to savings (both time and money) for the Health Service, should these savings be invested in more home visits for those who need them?? Nearly three-fourths (72%) said ?yes.?

Have you ever used your Internet connection for a two-way webcam video call, using Skype, MSN, Yahoo, etc.?? The response by 25% that they have never done that was surprising to the bloggers.? They also noted that the low number of people who have tried to do home videoconferencing and failed (8%) will likely disappoint critics of the UK broadband infrastructure who complain it is too slow.

The bloggers conclude there ?should be no problem with video conferencing as a way of interacting with health professionals starting in 2013? because people in their country support the idea.

Even with legalization vote, marijuana still not allowed at colleges in Washington, Colorado

SPOKANE, Wash. - Young voters helped pass laws legalizing marijuana in Washington and Colorado, but many still won't be able to light up.

Most universities have codes of conduct banning marijuana use, and they get millions of dollars in funding from the federal government, which still considers pot illegal.

With the money comes a requirement for a drug-free campus, and the threat of expulsion for students using pot in the dorms.

"Everything we've seen is that nothing changes for us," said Darin Watkins, a spokesman for Washington State University in Pullman.

So despite college cultures that include pot-smoking demonstrations each year on April 20, students who want to use marijuana will have to do so off campus.

"The first thing you think of when you think of legalized marijuana is college students smoking it," said Anna Marum, a Washington State senior from Kelso, Wash. "It's ironic that all 21-year-olds in Washington can smoke marijuana except for college students."

Voters in November made Washington and Colorado the first states to allow adults over 21 to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, and exit polling showed both measures had significant support from younger people. Taxes could bring the states, which can set up licensing schemes for pot growers, processors and retail stores, tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year, financial analysts say.

But the laws are fraught with complications, especially at places like college campuses. At Washington State, students who violate the code face a variety of punishments, up to expulsion, Watkins said. The same is true at the University of Colorado Boulder, where the student code of conduct prohibits possessing, cultivating or consuming illegal drugs.

"If you possess marijuana and are over 21, you still may face discipline under the student code of conduct," University of Colorado police spokesman Ryan Huff said.

Gary Gasseling, deputy chief of the Eastern Washington University police department, said that while they await guidance from the state Liquor Control Board, which is creating rules to govern pot, one thing is clear.

"The drug-free environment is going to remain in place," he said.

Even if conduct codes did not exist, marijuana remains illegal under federal law, another key reason that campuses will remain cannabis-free.

The Drug Free Schools and Communities Act requires that any university receiving federal funds adopt a program to prevent use of illicit drugs by students and employees, much in the same way other federal funding for law enforcement and transportation comes with clauses stipulating that recipients maintain drug-free workplaces.

Washington State, for instance, receives millions in federal research funds each year, which prohibits them from allowing substances illegal under federal law on campus.

College dormitory contracts also tend to prohibit possession of drugs, officials said. Dorms and other campus buildings also tend to be smoke-free zones, which would block the smoking of marijuana, officials said.

At Eastern Washington, there is a student-led movement to ban smoking even outside across the entire campus, Gasseling said.

In addition, NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from consuming marijuana or other illegal drugs.

With all these complications, it is reasonable to expect that some students will be confused by the new laws.

"Some type of communication is going to come out from the university to clarify this," said Angie Weiss, student lobbyist for the Associated Students of the University of Washington.

Derrick Skaug, student body vice-president at Washington State, said he believes most students will understand they cannot consume marijuana on campus.

"I don't see it likely that people will be smoking marijuana while walking around campus," Skaug said. "Most people do understand that just because it is no longer banned by state law, it doesn't amount to a get-out-of-jail-free pass."

Skaug acknowledged that some students might feel they should be allowed to consume marijuana on campus if it is legal everywhere else.

"It may be something worth starting a discussion on," Skaug said. "But there are a lot of issues that need to be addressed."

Colleges in Washington already dealt with this issue in 1998 when the state approved the use of medical marijuana, which was also banned on campus, Watkins said.

Students who wanted to use marijuana for medical reasons had to live off-campus, and Washington State waived its requirement that all freshmen had to live in dorms to accommodate them, Watkins said.

Of course, pot has been illegally used on college campuses for decades, and students for decades have been getting busted for possession.

Marum said that many Washington State students who have medical marijuana cards are allowed by their residence hall advisers to consume marijuana brownies, even though the drug is banned on campus.

"People in dorms now who want to smoke, they do it," Marum said. "I do think more people will be smoking in the dorms when marijuana is legal for use."

One thing that will change: Some off-campus police departments have said they will no longer arrest or ticket students who are 21 and older and using marijuana.

In Boulder and Seattle, prosecutors have said they will not prosecute criminal marijuana cases for less than an ounce for people age 21 and over.

Huff said University of Colorado police will no longer ticket people who are legal under state law to possess marijuana.

Gene linked to respiratory distress in babies

Some infants are more susceptible to potentially life-threatening breathing problems after birth, and rare, inherited DNA differences may explain why, according to research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The study is the first to identify a single gene ABCA3 that is associated with a significant number of cases of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in babies born at or near full term. RDS is the most common respiratory problem in newborns and the most common lung-related cause of death and disease among U.S. infants less than a year old.

Their findings will be published in the December 2012 issue of Pediatrics and are available online.

The research may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for prevention and treatment to improve respiratory outcomes for babies.

"We found that mutations in ABCA3 account for about 10 percent of respiratory disease in babies born near their due dates," said Jennifer A. Wambach, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics and the study's lead author. "These are babies who we typically think should have mature lungs and breathe normally. While we have known for a while that RDS is a heritable disease, this is the first gene to account for a significant proportion of disease among infants that are full-term or nearly full-term."

RDS occurs when an infant's lungs don't produce enough surfactant, a liquid that coats the inside of the lungs and helps keep them open so the baby can breathe. If there isn't enough surfactant, an infant has to work hard to breathe and may suffer from a lack of oxygen. Premature infants are at especially high risk of RDS, as surfactant production increases as babies near term. However, 2 percent to 3 percent of term and near-term babies also develop RDS.

The researchers' findings suggest a range of possibilities, Wambach said. These include using the genetic knowledge to plan affected infants' births near hospitals with neonatal intensive-care units and developing medical therapies to target the abnormal protein resulting from these mutations.

Wambach said the researchers hope to identify additional genes that cause neonatal RDS and better identify babies at risk.

"But right now we're studying how these mutations function in the laboratory," Wambach said. "Statistical associations help guide us, but we also need to understand the biology of these mutations."

The research team including Aaron Hamvas, MD, and F. Sessions Cole, MD evaluated five genes known to be important for normal breathing immediately after birth. Hamvas is the James Keating Professor of Pediatrics and medical director of the newborn intensive care unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Cole is the Park J. White, MD, Professor of Pediatrics.

The team looked at five genes involved in the metabolism of lung surfactant by taking DNA samples from more than 500 infants of African and European descent, with and without respiratory distress, who were carried to term or near term. They evaluated the same genes in an additional 48 babies with especially severe respiratory distress to see if their findings applied to that group, and in a third group of 1,066 Missouri babies, to determine the frequency of the mutations in a general population.

In comparing babies with and without respiratory distress, they found that babies of European descent with respiratory distress were more likely to have a single mutation in ABCA3, one of the five genes tested, than the infants with no breathing problems. Babies of African descent with respiratory distress also were more likely to have single ABCA3 mutations, but this difference did not reach statistical significance.

More than one-quarter of the babies with especially severe respiratory distress had a single mutation in ABCA3. Infants who inherit two defective copies of the ABCA3 gene usually require lung transplantation for survival. However, this is the first study to show that a single mutation in ABCA3 predisposes infants to respiratory distress that can usually be treated with neonatal intensive care.

The researchers also found that 1.5 percent to 3.6 percent of babies born in Missouri carry a single ABCA3 mutation, leading the researchers to estimate that about 10 percent of RDS cases among term and near-term infants may be attributable to mutations in ABCA3.

"We picked five candidate genes and thought we would find rare mutations in all of the genes," Wambach said. "However, we found very few mutations in the other genes, and they were not associated with RDS. Our findings were really isolated to this one gene, ABCA3."

?One in three people over age 65 takes a fall each year;? 20 to 30 percent of those result in moderate to severe injuries?.The associated cost of falls is predicted to be about $54 billion by 2020.?? ??ALFA Public Policy Brief, November 2012

The Center for Rural Development?in partnership with experts from Body Recall Inc.?is hosting a fall and? recovery presentation from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Somerset. This seminar will help community, health, faith-based, and business leaders, healthcare professionals and providers, and interested citizens create and refine their strategic planning efforts enabling seniors to age in place while reducing healthcare costs through fall prevention and fall recovery techniques.

The presentation, led by Body Recall executive director Jeff Rubin, is provided as a community service and will focus on how falls and fall prevention impact the healthcare initiative.

?Body Recall is delighted to partner with The Center for Rural Development in bringing this subject of falls and recovery to the leaders and communities that The Center serves,? said Rubin. ?As a leading cause of emergency room visits among just about every age group, this is an issue that has gained national attention because it impacts more than just the individual.

?Its financial, emotional, and physical costs are being felt by families, employers, communities, and our entire healthcare system,? he added. ?That?s why it?s so important for us to be working together to educate people about the impacts of falls and demonstrate what can be done through Body Recall to prevent or reduce the severity of falls, if they do occur.?

During the program, Carolyn Wallace, a certified Body Recall instructor and trainer, and students from her fall recovery team (ranging in age from 56-90-plus) will provide an exercise demonstration to show what is possible at any age and with any ability through Body Recall exercises.

?We are excited to reach out to our community and provide information and exercise training seniors need to live happy, productive lives,? said Laura Glover, director of sales and events at The Center. ?As our population continues to age, education on fall prevention and preventative fitness will have a significant impact on the health and well-being of older adults and our communities? health care costs.?

Body Recall, a national nonprofit organization founded in 1978 and headquartered in Berea, Ky., is a leader in designing and teaching fitness and flexibility training programs for older adults, special needs populations, and youth. It is the only training program that includes fall prevention and fall recovery techniques as part of its core curriculum.

The Center, a nonprofit organization serving 45 counties in Southern and Eastern Kentucky, is located at 2292 South U.S. 27 (at Traffic Light 15) in Somerset.
