The election is over. What happens to all that campaign cash?

An estimated 5.8 billion was spent on the 2012 election. Where can candidates spend their leftover money? What is off limits?

But speaking of cash, what about the money raked in by campaigns that was left unspent?

It?s a little too early to call the grand total of all 2012 election spending, but the?Center for Responsive Politics?estimates it will be above $5.8 billion, 7 percent higher than 2008. ?But?outside spending,? the group says, ?is a wild card that makes predictions tricky.?

No One Should Have to Fight Cancer Alone: Join @SMACancer in ...

Note from MOMeo Magazine: We asked Jennifer to share her journey in raising money and awareness for lung cancer because just as no one should have to fight cancer alone, no one should have to rally support alone. She has 16 more days to reach her November 30th fundraising goal of $35,000. Please help her in anyway you can: with words, with tweets, with donations. Thank you.

NoMo is the ringleader of ?SMAC! ? Sock Monkeys Against Cancer?, a gang of monkeys that provides tangible support to those with cancer, reminding them no one fights it alone.

Right now, NoMo is just a prototype.

But, with YOUR help, NoMo and his SMAC! buddy, Phoenix, can soon be in the hands of those with/impacted by cancer to help them SMAC! it, by pledging your financial support here.

(Check-writer only? See bottom of this post for details).

Funds pledged to my SMAC! campaign on the Start Some Good crowdfunding platform are used to launch my startup ? the SMAC! Sock Monkeys Against Cancer product line, which so far includes two SMAC! monkey prototypes:

NoMo, the ALL cancer fighting monkey

Phoenix, the ?WTF? (Where?s the Funding) for Lung Cancer?? fighting monkey

NoMo and PhoenixSMAC! Monkeys Phoenix & NoMo

I have one month to raise approximately $35,000 to launch the SMAC! monkey product line (November 1-30). You get some sweet rewards for pledging. Check them out here.

My ultimate goal: Create a custom monkey for each type of cancer.

My ultimate dream: Anyone diagnosed with cancer gets a SMAC! monkey from their hospital.

The Big Why

This whole entrepreneurial endeavor isn?t just about some random monkeys and attaching cancer to their name. It?s about my Mom? and too many others like her.

The SMAC! monkey line was inspired by my Mom, Leslie Lehrman, who was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer six years ago. No, she never smoked. ANYONE can get lung cancer (?nother whole story).

Mom snoozing with NoMo & Phoenix.

Cancer can be a very lonely existence. Family and friends can?t always be there. My Mom lives more than 1,200 miles away, making her appointments, tests, scan results and treatments that much harder for both of us.

This is why I created SMAC! ? to give Mom a ?buddy? she could hug to remind her that I am with her.

It?s hard for me to describe how my boys (NoMo and Phoenix) make me feel. I look into their little eyes and they just make my heart melt. It may sound silly, but when I get up, I say ?good morning? to them too. They just make me happy?even on my darkest days.
-Leslie Lehrman (Mom)

Mom has taken her SMAC! monkeys everywhere ? to chemo, doctor appointments and to the couch for some much needed rest (and snuggle time). She says they are now part of the family.

SMAC! Nation

Mom and I want to build ?SMAC! Nation,? a global movement in the fight against cancer that arms those with/impacted by this dang disease with cancer-crushing companions of the sock monkey kind.

With YOUR help, SMAC! Nation will be built with great philanthropic purpose, with giving at the heart of it all.

The SMAC! Mission

Tangible Support: Provide constant comfort, sock monkey ?mojo? and a cancer-busting buddy to those moving through their cancer journey.

Giving: ?One SMAC! = Two? Business Model: When you buy a SMAC! monkey, one will be given to someone with cancer (model to go into action the minute the company can financially sustain it).

Create Social Change: By giving to those impacted by cancer, you will also be contributing to advances in cancer research and programs (model to go into action the minute the company can financially sustain it).

So, doing good to create good ? all bundled together in one package.

Mom with NoMo & Phoenix at chemo.

Corporate Giving

Following the implementation of One SMAC = Two, my next giving goal is to direct steady SMAC! corporate funds to the following:

National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators ?
Professional organization that supports oncology nurse navigators assist patients and families to receive essential support services that help ease the burdens during cancer treatment.

Liz?s Legacy at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center ?
One of 66 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers in the U.S. Funds will be directed to lung cancer research.

I?m a huge advocate for ensuring people understand where their money is going when they give to any cause.

Jane and NoMo going for a spin.

Conscious Capitalism

Yes, there is such a thing as conscious capitalism and I?m a big believer. ?SMAC! Sock Monkeys Against Cancer? will operate under Jennifer Windrum Inc. as a socially conscious for profit company.

A good and successful example of combining a for profit with a social mission is TOMS Shoes. Like TOMS, SMAC! is more than just a product. It?s a movement that inspires people to want to help ? to want to give ? to want to be part of a larger mission to do good.

Please know I will be open, honest and forthcoming about where your SMAC! dollars go throughout the startup process and beyond.

Little SMAC!-ers spreading the word!

Join the Movement

For kids and adults alike, the SMAC! monkeys are ready to get down the business.

Join the movement! Help bring NoMo and Phoenix to life to help you and/or your loved ones SMAC! cancer. Pledge here!

Pledge today!

ps?if you only feel comfortable pledging by writing a check, you can send a check to the following (needs to arrive by November 28th):

Gothenburg State Bank
Leslie Lehrman SMAC! Memorial Fund
P.O. Box 81
Gothenburg, NE 69138
Please add a sticky note: ?To be deposited into account # 944041?

Those who write a checks are, unfortunately, not eligible for campaign rewards, but you will still help send SMAC! monkeys to cancer patients at the Nebraska Medical Center.

pps?Feel free to hang out with the SMAC! monkeys online. They kinda think they are social media super stars.

Live Review: Tanlines | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

Tanlines Mixed Emotions album art

Electro-pop duo Tanlines, based out of New York City, came to Motorco last Friday night as part of their last minute debut tour of the southern states.? Jesse Cohen (percussionist) and Eric Emm (guitarist and main vocalist) mix calypso and tribal beats with upbeat synth-driven melodies and plaintive vocals.? They create both dance-floor worthy pop and simplified, contemplative ballads, with the new wave, 80s influence ever-present.? Emm?s slightly nasal, mournful voice cohesively ties their sound together and defines their unique ability to evoke nostalgia and heartache with endearing optimism.

It?s their clever choice of mixing the energetic African-inspired drum rhythms with Emm?s honest lyrics and resonating vocals that make Tanlines so dang infectious, relatable, and undeniably stirring.? Their songs (?All of Me,? ?Real Life,? and ?Green Grass? to name a few) provide the necessary hooks and catchy choruses required of any great pop song to encourage dancing but possess a depth and truthfulness that is refreshing.

The band played songs from their recent LP Mixed Emotions (2012), with an oldie mixed in.? Although perhaps a little new and unfamiliar to the Durham crowd, they made a lasting impression for their first visit. ?The adage ?time flies when you?re having fun? was sadly true on Friday as the night seemed to end too soon.? It seemed just as people were warming up, the dance party was over? I hope Tanlines will pick up where they left off and come back soon.? The Triangle needs more exposure to the burgeoning indie-electro groups of Brooklyn and the more promotion Tanlines does in the South to spread their unique sound, the better.

New studies shed light on what it cost to vaccinate girls against HPV in low income countries

Two studies published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine examined the cost of delivering the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to primary school girls in Tanzania. Both studies found that the cost of HPV vaccine delivery to adolescent girls may be substantially higher compared with the cost of delivering a new vaccine to an infant where the delivery schedule matches the existing infant immunization schedule.

Cervical cancer is the second largest cancer-related killer of women in the world, with half a million new cases of cervical cancer worldwide in 2008, and it is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women in Tanzania. The main cause of this cancer is carcinogenic HPV types. The introduction of HPV vaccination in Sub-Saharan Africa offers a new opportunity for cervical cancer control. The WHO recommends vaccinating 9-13 year old girls to protect against HPV types 16 and 18, which contribute to the development of over 70% of cervical cancers. In most low- and middle-income countries, however, the vaccine price being offered to the public, at US$6-130 per dose, has been a barrier for vaccine uptake. Fortunately, the GAVI-Alliance (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations) announced in November 2011 that it would move towards funding support for HPV vaccines for eligible countries. HPV vaccines could therefore become an option in many countries where they would otherwise be unaffordable.

Information is lacking on large-scale, country-wide implementation costs of vaccine delivery. With this in mind, in the first paper, lead author Wilm Quentin from the Technical University in Berlin, and co-authors from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the National Institute for Medical Research in Tanzania and the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated the costs of a school-based HPV vaccine project that compared two different vaccine delivery strategies: class-based and age-based vaccination with health centre vaccination for those that missed a dose at school[1]. This study was implemented in randomly selected schools across 3 districts in Tanzania. The study also modelled incremental scaled-up costs of a regional vaccination program. Quentin et al found that, in general, costs for class-based delivery rather than age-based delivery were lower, and the economic scaled-up costs for Tanzania's Mwanza region were an estimated US$1.3 million (approx. US$9.76 per fully immunized girl, excluding vaccine costs).

In a second study, Raymond Hutubessy from the WHO and colleagues tested WHO new Cervical Cancer Prevention and Control Costing (C4P) tool over a five-year planning period. This tool assists low-and middle-income countries with planning their HPV vaccine programs and estimates the incremental costs to the health system of vaccinating adolescent girls through schools, health facilities and outreach-based strategies. The most important costs of service delivery were social mobilization, education and communication and operational costs such as training, health personnel time, vaccination cards, stationery, supervision and monitoring. It was estimated that the vaccine could be delivered at US$12.40 per fully immunized girl in terms of economic costs, again excluding vaccine costs. The authors noted that, when countries expand their routine immunization schedules with new vaccines to new target populations, as is the case with HPV vaccine, they face initial start-up costs to fund pre-introduction activities such as training, not to mention ensuring that the vaccine is delivered on an ongoing basis. However, after introduction, costs would be cheaper and make HPV vaccination even more affordable. Hutubessy commented "These figures will enable governments to plan ahead so that they can adequately secure the financial resources required to introduce HPV vaccination programs."

Hutubessy, who was an author on both papers, believes that the estimated costs of establishing a regional HPV vaccine program that delivers 3 doses of vaccine to girls at schools via phased national introduction in Tanzania can potentially pose financial and logistical challenges to the Ministry of Health of Tanzania. The estimates from both studies of US$9.76-12.40 per fully immunized girl, excluding vaccine costs, are higher than delivery costs of existing routine vaccination programs. At the same time he also believes that HPV vaccination programs will be more affordable and easier to implement in low resource settings compared to other preventive cervical cancer interventions such as population based screening programs. In addition, other studies have suggested that HPV vaccination at US$25 per fully-immunized girl would be very cost-effective in Eastern Africa.

Given the current challenges in achieving high coverage with cervical screening programmes in low income countries, HPV vaccination will be an important public health intervention for the prevention of cervical cancer. A further reduction in vaccine price and integration of HPV vaccination with other adolescent health interventions could improve the affordability and hence the cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination programs, especially in low and middle income countries where the existing health systems are already stretched.

Successful Sales Management: Saga Pet Insurance - No Thankyou

Saga Pet Insurance - No Thankyou

InsuranceWe all understand, or at least should, insurance companies are in business to make money. In their case that means paying out less in claims than taking in premiums.

OK, so insurance is there to cover the possible, not probable, disaster. ?We understand. ?And there's a compact, implied at least, between us insured and those insurers. We play fair with each other, and everything works out fine.?

But it turns out at least one insurer doesn't believe in the play fair bit. ?We've given them a bunch of business in the past, but won't anymore, because they only understand one side of what's fair.

We've been paying Saga Pet Insurance up to ?500 each year for the last five, without a claim in sight.

Recently, our pet Bouvier de Flandres developed some skin problems the vet recommended should be investigated.

We agreed of course. ?He's been part of our family for more than 10 years, and we're insured.

Except it turns out we weren't, to the extent we thought, at least.

The vets bill came to ?661.00.

We discovered to our horror the insurance only covered 75% of any claim. ?That was bad enough. ?Having paid out ?500 in premiums we were looking at a cost to us of ?165.

If only we'd been that lucky.

By the time Saga Pet Insurance?had sliced, and diced, the treatment into pieces, and disallowed any item with an individual cost less than ?75.00 we knew we'd been screwed.

Out of the total bill of ?661.00 we find ourselves paying out ?393.50. ?Saga Pet Insurance had decided to pay ?266.00 out of our ?500.00 premium.

We won't argue. ?We're sure this is all covered in the terms and conditions, in the small print.

But we won't be spending any more money on premiums with Saga Pet Insurance. ?And we'll look closely before renewing any of our other Saga Insurance policies.

There's a lesson here for all sales people. ?You can fool people some of the time, but you won't get away with doing it every time.

Fraud? No, spider delays Mass. town's vote count

(AP) ? It wasn't hanging chads or voter fraud that delayed the vote count in one Massachusetts town ? it was a spider.

Rehoboth (ruh-HOH'-buth) Town Clerk Kathleen Conti says one of the town's aging voting machines malfunctioned Tuesday morning.

She called a technician, who said a spider web apparently prevented the machine's scanner from counting ballots. Conti tells The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro (http://bit.ly/XmzmSj ) all Rehoboth's voting machines received preventive maintenance a month ago.

The vote count wasn't completed until Wednesday afternoon.

Rehoboth voters favored Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, but went for Democratic U.S. House candidate Joseph Kennedy III.

Rehoboth, with about 12,000 residents, is about 50 miles southwest of Boston.

Conti says she has been pressing to have the machines replaced for several years.

Want Black Friday deals? Try a little loyalty.

Black Friday doesn't have to be a ?free for all. ?From early entry into sales to access to exclusive items, retailers are giving priority to their rewards members and card holders this holiday shopping season, on Black Friday and beyond. Here's a breakdown of which priority deals are worth it.?

By Jeff Somogyi,?Contributor / November 10, 2012

In this August 2012 file photo, a cashier rings up a sale at a Target store in Chicago. Target is giving REDcard members early access to their Black Friday deals, but Somogyi warns against signing up for any credit card just to snag a deal.

While Black Friday still marks the official beginning of the holiday shopping season,?things will be a little different this year. Not only will shoppers be?using their smartphones and tablets to comparison shop, but we've noticed an interesting trend emerging, in which retailers tie early promotions to loyalty programs.

Already, Lowe's, Sears, and Target have pushed "sneak peeks," promising either a preview of the store's Black Friday ad, or actual advance access to the deals themselves. The catch? Customers must be willing to register for the store's loyalty or rewards program. It's a brilliant strategy really: Black Friday shoppers feverishly crave information and access, and retailers are forever looking for ways to hook consumers in the long-term. As such, we wouldn't be surprised to see other retailers join in on the game before Black Friday 2012 is out.

So what exactly is this trio of stores offering consumers who hop aboard the loyalty train? And is it worth it? Here's a rundown of what each has (or had) in store for Black Friday shoppers this year.

Where the Santa Clarita real estate search engines fall short

by paris911 on November 10, 2012

I know you know that I am a big fan of technology and search. ?It is very important for Buyers of the World to find the most accurate renditions of the Sellers Listings that are currently on the market for sale. Without any ?fail safe? mechanisms or ?policing agencies? in place, some of the Real Estate syndication websites are posting the following ?misleading? property types:

  • Homes that are in escrow ? showing up as active
  • Listings that have been sold in time past but still are getting GREAT traffic for the syndication website so that syndication site is keeping them as appearing as active(scandalous)
  • Pre Foreclosures and Bank owned as if the real estate buyers can purchase them without an issue
When searching on-line for real estate properties, make sure your local Santa Clarita real estate agent is giving you the right goods to search. ?They should have systems in place so you can search without having to worry about your personal information being sold to the highest bidder. ?In addition, their systems should update much faster and with more clarity that all of the Real Estate syndication websites. ?Your agent?s system for search should be based on the IDX ? internet data exchange ? principal.

That is an agreement and data feed that the syndication websites cannot get. ?That feed is only available to individual Realtors working under a Licensed Broker. ?Those agents that have IDX being displayed also have to be full members of the National Association of Realtors and in CA ? the California Association of Realtors (NAR and CAR). ?On top of that, those real estate agents have to be a member of ?a local Board of Realtors ? In Good Standing. ?

Most syndication websites are built around generating?income for their owners. ?They want to sell your personal information to the agents willing to pay the highest price. ?We don?t appreciate that type of business model due to many people being misled as to what the websites actual intention is. ?If they just had a large disclaimer on their website. ??Your personal and private information is going to be sold to multiple real estate agents hungry for your business!!!?

There are three new listings that have just been listed in Saugus CA. ?Each of these listings has been listed for sale by the Saugus CA real estate experts. ?We are on the prowl for buyers for each of these listings ? please let us know if you are interested or have any family/friends that may be.

Writers in the Sky Podcast, E-zine, & Blog: Jewish Book Fairs and ...

By Scott Lorenz

If you are a Jewish author or specialize in writing about Jewish issues, you should consider reviewing this list of book fairs in the Jewish community. Book fairs are excellent places for authors to interact with the public as well as network with book industry leaders, publicists, and book editors.

Book festivals and fairs are held year round all over the world. As a book marketing specialist, I am the first to impress on authors the new and powerful marketing avenues open to all authors on the Internet ? from websites and book trailers to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. While these are excellent tools when used properly, authors should never overlook opportunities to meet the reading public face-to-face.

Book fairs typically seek out guest speakers. By volunteering to speak at a Jewish book fair, you will pique the interest of new readers and potentially gain a few new fans. Additionally, you can add the speaking appearance to your resume. Be sure to plan ahead because book fairs, speaking engagements and readings are all planned months in advance.
