The Real Housewives of New Jersey Recap: Whine Party

Too Good Too Be True. That's what The Real Housewives of New Jersey's trip to "Whine Country" has been so far, but that's all about to change.

We'll break down all the sexcapades and snubs in our THG +/- recap!

The Russian River Valley looks like such tranquil place until the Jersey crowd pass through.  An immediate minus 12 to Teresa showing off her potty mouth.

And just how desperate is this woman to get her husband's attention?  She's asking him "Do you want to stick your finger in my ***?" and telling him she wants to do him in the vineyards all in front of her brother and sister-in-law.  What is she overcompensating for?

Teresa Rides in the RV

We find out all too soon but let's stick to our RV ride for a moment.

Plus 10 to Melissa for pointing out to Teresa that once she gives quotes about her life to magazines, she's given up the expectation of privacy.  If she didn't want people to ask her if she's going to jail, why talk about it and pose for a magazine cover?

Jacqueline says something about Teresa seeing the truth about herself.  Ha!  Jacqueline is so naive. Minus 11.  I don't see Jacqueline being able to keep their relationship casual in a way that she doesn't end up in tears yet again.

Then we're off to do some wine tasting. Why in Hell would Chris invite the Guidices and Gorgas along if he wanted to make a good impression on his new business associates?  Minus 15.  What was he thinking?

As Joe Gorga says the wine tastes like his wife and Guidice wants to leave, Teresa wonders why the others are such sticks in the mud.  This is fun, not work.  Looks like someone didn't get the memo.

The two Joes act like a couple of horny teenagers but is that really surprising?  The question of the day…who can see Teresa's crotch? Minus 13.  If she can afford the designer dresses you'd think she could buy a pair of underwear to go with it.

Which is worse? Gorga jumping on the art work at the winery or Guidice saying it looks like Gorga's penis? These boys really need to go back to Jersey.

The one nice moment of the trip is Caroline's birthday surprise.  Her husband and kids set up dinner overlooking the vineyard and the view was gorgeous.  Plus 22.  Nicely done.  Caroline says that Albert's the best thing that ever happened to her followed by her three kids.  It's a sweet moment and you can tell she means it.

Such obvious love and affection amongst family members makes the lack of it all the more glaring in the Guidices.

Does Joe not remember that he's wearing a live mic?  Because he takes a phone call that's obviously from another woman and then he calls Teresa his "b*tch wife" and says, "She's such a c**t."

Minus 20.  So not only is he cheating on Teresa but he's tearing her down too.

Just when you think it can't get worse, it does.  Teresa seems to know there's something up and doesn't buy his story about the phone call being from a guy from work.  But does she confront him about it? No.  Instead she wants to have sex in the vineyards.  What makes it all the more embarrassing is that he turns her down and calls her a "f*ckin' whore" before finally giving in.

Teresa & Joe in the Vineyard

Minus 12 because did we really need the play by play from Richie about Teresa with her legs in the air?  Ugh.

The saddest part is that some day their kids will probably see this footage.  Minus 22.

There's one more dinner to go in the wine country and things continue to unravel.  Teresa gives a lovely toast mentioning how much she loves everyone…except her cousin Kathy who is sitting right next to her.  Was it an intentional snub or did she simply forget to mention her cousin?

On this one I've got to agree with Richie.  Who the Hell cares what Teresa says?  Plus 10. It might be better to be snubbed by Teresa than noticed.

Looks like we've got one more week on the west coast.  Will any of them still be speaking by the time this trip is over?

Intense bursts of star formation drive fierce galactic winds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Fierce galactic winds powered by an intense burst of star formation may blow gas right out of massive galaxies, shutting down their ability to make new stars.

Sifting through images and data from three telescopes, a team of astronomers found 29 objects with outflowing winds measuring up to 2,500 kilometers per second, an order of magnitude faster than most observed galactic winds.

"They're nearly blowing themselves apart," said Aleksandar Diamond-Stanic, a fellow at the University of California's Southern California Center for Galaxy Evolution, who led the study. "Most galactic winds are more like fountains; the outflowing gas will fall back onto the galaxies. With the high-velocity winds we've observed the outflowing gas will escape the galaxy and never return."

Diamond-Stanic and colleagues published their findings in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The galaxies they observed are a few billion light years away with outflowing winds of 500 to 2,500 kilometers per second. Initially they thought the winds might be coming from quasars, but a closer look revealed these winds emanate from entire galaxies.

Young, bright and compact, these massive galaxies are in the midst of or just completing a period of star formation as intense as anyone has ever observed.

"These galactic-scale crazy-fast winds are probably driven by the really massive stars exploding and pushing out the gas around them," said Alison Coil, professor in UC San Diego's Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences and a co-author of the paper. "There's just such a high density of those stars it's like all these bombs went off near each other at the same time. Each bomb evacuates the area around it, then the next can push gas out further until they're evacuating gas on the scale of the whole galaxy."

Galaxies with winds this fast are also quite rare, opening up the question of whether these are unusual events or part of a common phase in the evolution of massive galaxies that is seldom observed because it is so brief.

Astrophysicists still lack an explanation for how and why star-making ends. Theorists who model the evolution of galaxies often invoke supermassive black holes called active galactic nuclei, which can also generate savage winds, to explain how gas needed to form stars can be depleted.

These new observations demonstrate that black holes may not be necessary to account for how these kinds galaxies run out of gas. "The winds seem to be powered by the starburst," Diamond-Stanic said. "The central supermassive black hole is apparently just a spectator for these massive stellar fireworks."

Even low blood lead levels linked to gout risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Even relatively low levels of lead in the blood may be linked to an increased risk of gout, a painful form of arthritis, researchers reported Monday.

Researchers have known that heavy lead exposure is linked to the condition - a form of arthritis in which the joints periodically become swollen, red and hot. Gout most often affects the big toe, though it can also strike the feet, ankles, knees, hands and wrists.

But the new findings connect gout risk to low levels of lead in the blood - well within the range currently considered acceptable for adults.

For adults, lead levels of 25 micrograms per deciliter of blood or lower are considered "non-elevated."

In developed countries - where policies like removing lead from gasoline and paint have greatly cut people's exposure - typical lead levels are far below that threshold. In the U.S., the average level is about 3 mcg/dL.

But in this study, gout risk started to climb once adults' lead levels surpassed 1.2 mcg/dL.

That's in line with some past research that has linked relatively low lead levels to other risks, including worsening of kidney disease and death from heart disease.

"All of this suggests there's no such thing as 'safe' or 'acceptable' lead levels," said study leader Dr. Eswar Krishnan, of Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California.

The study, reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine, is based on data from a periodic federal health survey. More than 6,100 Americans age 40 and up had their blood lead levels measured, and were interviewed about their health and lifestyle.

Overall, just under five percent said they'd been diagnosed with gout. And the risk went up as people's lead levels rose.

Of the adults with the highest lead levels, about six percent had gout - versus less than two percent of people with the lowest lead levels.

That does not prove the higher lead levels were to blame, Krishnan acknowledged. But he said he and his colleagues controlled for a number of other factors that might explain the connection.

Gout arises when uric acid crystals build up in the joints. The body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines - substances found naturally in the body, but also in certain foods, like organ meats, anchovies, mushrooms and some seafood.

Anything that boosts the body's production of uric acid, or slows the clearance of it, also raises the risk of gout. Obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease are some examples.

But even when Krishnan's team accounted for those factors - plus people's incomes and smoking habits - lead levels remained linked to gout risk.

People in the top 25 percent for lead levels had the highest gout risk: four times higher than people in the bottom 25 percent.

That top group had lead levels ranging from 2.6 to 27 mcg/dL, according to the researchers, but most were well below the acceptable lead threshold. Only three people in the study had lead levels of 25 mcg/dL or higher, while 31 had levels of 10 mcg/dL or higher.

It's not clear why low-level lead would boost gout risk. But Krishnan said the theory is that even small amounts of lead can hinder the kidneys' ability to excrete uric acid.

Dr. Ashwini R. Sehgal, who wrote an accompanying editorial, agreed that the threshold for acceptable lead levels in adults should be revisited.

In an interview, Sehgal said that many people with elevated lead levels are exposed to the metal at work - in industries like mining, construction and battery making.

If you've ever worked with lead, tell your doctor and ask whether a blood test is a good idea, said Sehgal, a professor of community health improvement at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

"I don't think that everyone should have their lead levels checked," Sehgal said.

Krishnan agreed. He also noted that while the average blood lead level in the U.S. is 3 mcg/dL, "that would include a large number of people with zero or near-zero levels."

But Krishnan said that if a person has gout and no known risk factors for it, like obesity, doctors could consider lead testing.

Typically, if someone's lead levels are elevated, it would be important to reduce any known exposure to it.

Besides job exposure, Krishnan said that people can inhale lead through cigarette smoke or lead-containing dust; deteriorating lead-based paint in an older home, for example, can contaminate household dust.

Lead can also be in drinking water, especially in older homes with lead-based pipes. And some people are exposed through hobbies, like working on cars, or making glazed pottery or stained glass.

When a person's lead levels are particularly high, a treatment called chelation therapy might be recommended. That involves giving certain drugs that bind to lead and allow it to be excreted in the urine.

But no one knows if that therapy can ease symptoms of gout in people with mildly elevated lead levels

"There are medications that can leach lead out of the blood," Krishnan said. "But they are not approved to treat gout. And they are not without risks."

Chelation therapy can, for instance, damage the kidneys permanently.

So even if someone with gout were found to have relatively elevated lead levels, no specific treatment recommendations can be made, Krishnan said.

Both he and Sehgal said the findings' main importance have to do with bigger-picture public health.

"I think policymakers should consider these data" in any future review of the lead threshold for adults, Krishnan said.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently lowered the maximum acceptable lead level for children - from 10 mcg/dL to 5 mcg/dL. The threshold for children is lower because their developing brains are particularly vulnerable to damage from lead.

Sehgal said he thinks lower thresholds for adults are feasible. He noted that in Germany, the standards are 7 mcg/dL for women and 9 mcg/dL for men.

Google's Motorola Files Patent Case Against Apple; Aims To Block US Imports Of iPhone, iPad, Mac Computers

Google Inc's (GOOG), Motorola Mobility filed a new patent infringement case against Apple Inc. (AAPL) claiming features of Apple devices including location reminders, e-mail notification, phone/ video players, and Siri's voice-recognition program infringe on seven of Motorola Mobility patents.

The complaint was filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) August 17. The petition seeks ban on U.S. imports of iPhone, iPad and Mac computers, Bloomberg reported. Apple's products are made in Asia.

The Verge in its report noted that none of the seven patents are considered standards-essential, whereby Motorola is not obligated to license the patents under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

"We would like to settle these patent matters, but Apple's unwillingness to work out a license leaves us little choice but to defend ourselves and our engineers' innovations, Motorla said in an e-mail statement to Bloomberg.

Google seems to have its sights set on Apple destruction as a win in this particular suit could deal a major blow to Apple, Digital Trends?reported.

Follow us

Motorola Mobility and Apple have been at loggerheads since 2010 when licensing talks between the two organizations failed. Earlier, Apple contended Motorola Mobility's demands were unreasonable and argued that phones made by Motorola and other handset manufacturers that run on Android operating system copied patented features of the iPhone.

In the first case, a commission is scheduled to announce a final decision August 24 that may probably result in an import ban on iPhone. In the second case that Motorala filed against Apple, a copy of the petition may be made available by August 20. However, in the first case iPad 4G and iPhone 4S would be exempt as they employ Qualcomm chipset, Digital Trends pointed out.

Apple is yet to comment on the second case pursued by Motorola. However, this increases the headache for Apple as it is already engaged in a high-pitched patent-infringement trial with its market rival, Samsung Electronics Co.

The first case filed by Motorola Mobility was filed prior to its acquisition by Google Inc. A key issue in the first case is whether the ITC should issue ban on products found to infringe patents on technology employed in industry standards, Bloomberg added.

The first case pertains to the way computers transmit signals through Wi-Fi wherein Apple holds the stance that federal district court should resolve issues on fair usage and not ITC.

Apple filed its own case against Motorola Mobility with the ITC. A commission in March upheld judge ruling that Motorola was not infringing on Apple patent and two other patents were invalid. Apple is appealing against that ruling.

(AP) ? A United Nations spokeswoman says the last U.N. observers still in Syria have started to leave the country as their mission officially ends at midnight Sunday.

Juliette Touma tells The Associated Press that the rest of the observers will leave within hours. There are about 100 observers left in Syria ? a third of the number at the peak of the mission earlier this year.

Their departure comes after the Security Council agreed to end the U.N. mission and back a small new liaison office that will support any future peace efforts.

The U.N.'s top body has acknowledged that international efforts to significantly reduce the violence and end the Syrian government's use of heavy weapons ? conditions set for the mission's possible extension ? have failed.

Man in Afghan uniform kills NATO service member

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? NATO says a man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform has shot and killed a coalition service member in southern Afghanistan.

The coalition said Thursday that the shooter was killed when coalition forces returned fire.

The coalition said it's investigating the attack, which happened Wednesday. No other details were immediately available.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A mortar fired during heavy fighting between NATO forces and the Taliban hit a house in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, killing three women, a local official said.

The battle began when Taliban fighters ambushed a NATO convoy traveling through Chak district in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a spokesman for the provincial governor. Both sides used heavy weapons, but it was not immediately clear who fired the mortar, he said.

Four women in the house were also wounded, Shahid said.

NATO forces spokesman Capt. Justin Brockhoff said reports indicate it was joint Afghan and international patrol that came under fire. He said they were looking into reports that "civilian casualties may have been caused by the engagement."

Last year was the deadliest on record for civilians in the Afghan war, with 3,021 killed, according to the United Nations. Taliban-affiliated militants were responsible for more than three-quarters of those deaths.

In the country's northeast, another group of Taliban fighters launched an overnight attack on a police post, killing four officers and abducting 16, Badakhshan Deputy Gov. Shams ul-Rahman said.

Police reinforcements have been sent to secure the post, which sits on a key highway passing through Fayz Abad district, he said.

He said two police officers were wounded in the hours-long attack, in which the Taliban were aided by militants from other Central Asian countries. Badakhshan province borders Pakistan, Tajikistan and China.

Also Thursday, Afghan border police killed eight insurgents who they found placing a bomb near a road in Spin Boldak district, said Gen. Abdul Razaq said, the police chief for Kandahar.

How rising dev costs are killing AAA gaming - Computer Games ...

Harry Potter is huge and a very expensive project, but it was directed by one director, written by one screenwriter and based on a book written by one writer. Not a department of fifty people, directed by a board of executives, sitting behind the screenwriter and telling him what to do. If it was a game, it would never get made and J.K.Rowling could never keep the rights for the title if she was a game designer. She would be replaced with somebody less stubborn and cheaper for the sequel at the first opportunity and the sequel would be utter crap.

THE AMAZING STORY OF STEVE AND JOHN, THE EXECUTIVES

This is how the gaming industry works: One beautiful morning, shareholders of the company wake up and when they turn on their TVs, they see a report on CNN, that the new Call of Duty game is the ?best selling shit evah?. They all call the CEO of their company ? Steve ? a former CEO of a famous shoe maker and ask: ?How is it possible, that we don?t have our own super successful FPS franchise? You don?t want to go back to the shoe industry Steve, do you? And by the way, what does FPS mean??

Steve is pissed off and calls his director of development: ?Hey John we need to release a Call of Duty killer next year. Make me one, buy me one... I don?t know... Do something and do it quick. Here is three hundred million; that should be enough. It can?t go wrong if we throw that much money at it.?

John who never plays games, because he says he needs to keep distance, to make the right decisions, asks his assistant, who is the only person in the building with some understanding of games: ?Hey Bill, we are going to make a Call of Duty killa, any ideas?? Bill has some ideas, he knows some people who pitched their FPS games to the company (unsuccessfully), so he starts to negotiate with them.

In the meantime, John decides that he should try to play this game they are going to copy. His other assistant installs it on his PC and John starts to play the tutorial. ?Damn! This game is so complicated, that even such a clever person like me can?t get into it! And why the hell am I not killing anyone after five minutes? This is supposed to be a shooter, isn?t it? I bet that if they made it more accessible, they would sell a few hundred million more copies... Damn, I?m smart. That?s a brilliant idea! Now let?s get back to online poker.?

In the meantime, Bill convinces one of the best FPS studios with the famous designer Tom to work on the game. They pitch their project to John. He plays Angry Birds during the presentation and has a speech at the end: ?Great job guys, I know you put a lot of effort into it, but we here want to make something special, and we know how to make something special. I was a producer of Lord of the Kings. It was utter crap, but I told them how to fix it and it sold like crazy. I saved it. So let me tell you my genius idea. Those other games are too complicated. Our game is about shooting. We don?t need the other boring stuff like reloading. I want the game to be accessible by anyone, even my grandma. I want my grandma to experience the best shooting she ever had!?

The team looks stunned. Tom tries to raise few questions, but John silences him: ?Man, you have to trust me. Those guys at Lord of the Kings also had doubts, but I know what I am doing. That?s instinct. And BTW, we need to ship in 11 months, that?s the end of our fiscal year. So hurry up, we don?t have much time!?

After the crushed developers are gone, John gets little bit nervous. ?You know Bill, that Tom guy... I don?t really like him that much. Is he really that good?? ?Yes boss, he is the best we could get. He did BOOM. It sold 30 million copies. People love him.? ?Well, that doesn?t make him special. Lord of the Kings sold 40 and I also worked on that other game with balls... what was it called? It sold 30 as well. I have instinct, and it tells me that I don?t trust this guy. What if he screws up?? ?But boss, their ideas are brilliant. You just heard it.? ?Yeah I heard it... more or less.... But we need to make sure that he doesn?t screw up. We will put somebody on his ass. Hire some producer... I have friend at Pepsi who is bored, call him... and what about the story?? ?They have their own writer. He was nominated for a BAFTA two times.? ?BAFTA what? We can?t make Call of Duty killa with some nerd. Hire someone from Hollywood! No. Hire two. Two is better than one. And I want to make sure, that the game mechanics for shooting are gonna be great. We need a shooting director for my game.? ?Yes boss.? ?And you know what? We need to look like we really mean it. Shareholders like that. Are those idiots who were just here really good?? ?Yes boss.? ?Ok, so let?s buy them. That will look cool. And that idiot who thinks his ideas are better than mine will shut up for a while.?

The results are obvious. You have a task for one person, but because somebody is unable to take personal responsibility, you have several people to do that task, because it feels safe. It?s not safe. In fact it?s disastrous. Most of the time, those people will be fighting each other, duplicating their work and protecting their asses. They will hardly produce anything special or try something risky. The fact, that very often, their assignment will change, just because John or Steve changed their minds, which is happening all the time and usually scratches all progress that was made, is also not very helpful. After some time, most talented people leave and all you have is an empty shell of a once famous company and hyper expensive rip-off of some other game. At the end, when the project fails, no one is personally responsible. It failed ?because the market is changing? or the team ?wasn?t good enough?. So the team is laid off and Steve and John are perfectly safe. If it?s successful for some miraculous reason, and against all Steve?s and John?s ?great ideas? and experiments, Steve and John get all the glory (and Ferraris and blow jobs) and the team is restructured (laid off) anyway.
